Old Stone Fort Museum
The Old Stone Fort Museum sits on the SFA campus and is a replica of the original 1779 stone trading post — one of the oldest structures in Texas history and a touchstone of the city's identity as "The Oldest Town in Texas." The museum houses rotating and permanent exhibits on the history of the Nacogdoches area, from Indigenous peoples through the Spanish colonial period and the Republic of Texas. Admission is free.
Open Tuesday through Saturday 9am–5pm. Buses use campus drop-off zones; the Clark Street entrance to campus is the most direct approach. A great pairing with the Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden for a full campus day trip.

Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden
The Ruby M. Mize Azalea Garden is part of the SFA Pineywoods Native Plant Center and is recognized as one of the largest azalea gardens in the United States, with more than 10,000 azalea plants across a beautifully landscaped site. Peak bloom runs late March through April, when the garden explodes in color and draws garden enthusiasts and group tours from across the state. Admission is free; the garden is open daily from dawn to dusk.

Texas State Railroad — Rusk Depot
The Texas State Railroad Rusk Depot is about 50 miles west of Nacogdoches and one of the most popular group day-trip destinations in East Texas. The historic excursion railroad runs steam and diesel trains between Rusk and Palestine through the East Texas Piney Woods — a scenic and memorable experience for school groups, family reunions, and history buffs alike. Buses park at the Rusk depot lot.
Train tickets must be booked in advance through the railroad's website or by calling 1-855-632-7729. Spring and fall are peak seasons; book your bus six to eight weeks out for those dates. The 50-mile drive from Nacogdoches takes about 50 minutes.
Fredonia Brewery
Fredonia Brewery is Nacogdoches's home-grown craft brewery, tucked into the heart of downtown just steps from the historic brick streets. The taproom pours a rotating lineup of house-crafted beers and is open Saturdays from 2pm–8pm, making it a natural anchor for a downtown Nacogdoches evening or a brewery crawl that continues west toward Tyler and Lindale. Parking in downtown Nacogdoches is limited, especially on busy evenings — buses stage on Mound Street or nearby side streets while the group enjoys the taproom.
